Thelma Mae Bailey, born August 20, 1925, at Gage, OK. was the youngest child of Homer Lee and Mary Margaret (Maggie) Castor Quickel. She passed from this life February 22, 2021 at the age of 95. Thelma was born on a farm seven miles southeast of Gage. She attended Greenwood school and also Fargo school. She graduated from Gage High School in 1943. Soon after graduation Thelma began working at the Newman Clinic in Shattuck, OK. as a bookkeeper and receptionist. During WWII she lived and worked in California. She returned to Woodward, OK. in 1945.
On January 10, 1946, Thelma married George E. Smales, Jr. During their marriage, Thelma and George lived in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas and Indiana. They were the adoptive parents of two children, Douglas Wayne in 1950 and Pamela Kay in 1962. Doug spent seven years in the Air Force and following his discharge he was employed at Boeing at Wichita, KS. Pamela became an RN and has worked in that profession since. These children, their spouses and grandchildren were the joy in Thelma and George's lives and they were very proud of them and their accomplishments. Following the passing of George in 1983, Thelma returned to live in Woodward and in 1987 she married Robert D. Bailey and they moved and made their home in La Mesa, CA. In 1991 they returned to Woodward and Thelma worked at Star Model Men's store and Zwanziger Funeral Home.
Thelma was a member and served as a deacon of the First Christian Church in Woodward where she was baptized March 8, 1948. She did volunteer work at church, the Woodward hospital, at nursing homes and was always doing things for other people. She enjoyed working in her yard, sewing for her grandchildren, and traveling. Her greatest pride and joy was her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Maggie Quickel, her husbands, George Smales, Jr. and Robert Bailey and her three siblings, Ophelia Kitten and Albert Quickel and Margaret Olson.
Her memory is cherished by her children, Douglas Smales and wife Karen of Wichita, KS and Pamela McCluskey and husband Kim of Casper, WY. She will be missed by her four granddaughters, Heather Bannister and husband Corey, Shannon Garner and husband Shawn, Lauren Donley and husband Luke, and Alyssa McCluskey, as well as her nine great grandchildren, Kaylyn Kutilek, Reagan Ramsey, Ben Bannister, Brady Bannister, Kendall Garner, Claire Garner, Boone Donley, Will Donley, and Callahan Donley. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
