Obituary

Verla Mae Cunningham was born June 23, 1910 near Alton, Kansas. She was the daughter of Rollin Oro and Effie May Cunningham. Verla moved with her parents from Osborne County, Kansas to Dewey County, Oklahoma in 1911. Her parents filed a claim under the Homestead Act. The location is where J.C. Buck now lives. Verla attended the Fairview rural grade school and graduated from the 8th grade there. The county superintendent gave the final exam at the Perry school.

Verla married Elmer Lyman Moss on December 24, 1929 in the Courthouse at Woodward, Oklahoma. Pearl and John Seidel stood up with them. Elmer was a farmer, stockman, and did custom threshing for his neighbors. Their first home, after marriage, was the Updyke place where their son Duane and daughter Arlene were both born. They then moved to the Johnson (Liston) place where their son Allen was born. Elmer and Verla's final move was to the Higgins place where they lived when Elmer died on September 5th, 1943. Before Elmer's death he and Verla were baptized on November 1st, 1936 along with Claude and Millie Moss, Dave and Hazel Boyd, and Bob McDonald. All seven were baptized by Brother Glen Smith. Elmer and Verla were both active in the church.

After Elmer's death the next year was a time of major adjustment in Verla's life. With the help of her immediate family, many brethren, and neighbors the crops were planted, harvested, and sold and the place was paid for. Glen Cunningham, Hugh Boyd, Mugs and Bony Cole, Ralph Stevens, and Bob McDonald were among the names remembered, along with many others too numerous to mention, that rendered special acts of kindness and lent helping hands during the trying times that Verla came through.

On August 16, 1948 Verla married Guy Boyd in the home of his daughter, Doris Brown, near Farmington, New Mexico. To this union daughter Arlinda was born. Guy died on April 16, 1959 and Verla laid her second husband to rest.

Verla remained on the farm after Guy's death and raised Arlinda. She enjoyed neighbors, family members, and church members. She was regular in church attendance and stayed steadfast in the Faith until death. After Guy's death she worked for a time at the Vici School Library, the Vici Nursing Home, and the Vici Senior Citizens Center as a cook death. She made many friends wherever she went and worked.

Verla loved to talk about the life she lived before her parents had automobiles, electricity, blacktop roads, and many other modern conveniences that we now all enjoy. She had many memories of hard times during the dust bowl years when money was hard to come by.

Verla died at her home on February 25th, 2008 at the age of 97 years and 8 months. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Elmer Moss and Guy Boyd; by her parents, Rollin Oro and Effie May Cunningham; by four brothers, Harold, Wilbur, Glen, and Oro Cunningham; by three sisters, Ruth Hale, Leta Smith, and Lois Parry.

She is survived by her four children, Duane Moss and wife Merlene of Brownfield, TX, Arlene and husband Wayne Boyd, Allen and wife Eula Moss all of Vici, OK, and Arlinda and husband Ralph Nauman of Moscow, ID; by sixteen grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren, and twelve great-great grandchildren, along with a host of friends and brethren.
