IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vernon Wayne
Peck
July 28, 1939 – April 5, 2024
Vernon Wayne Peck, son of Floyd Buster and Catherine Minerva (Howard) Peck, was born July 28, 1939, northwest of Leedey, Oklahoma, in Dewey County. He passed from this life at home surrounded by loved ones on April 5, 2024.
Vernon attended school at Leedey Public Schools all 12 years, graduating with the Class of 1957. He also attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
Vernon and Anita Lou Cleveland were married in Seiling, Oklahoma on May 16, 1959. Together they were blessed with two sons, James Orville and Steven Wayne Peck. They made their home in Vici for the majority of their married life.
Vernon was a natural born salesman. He started his career in sales in Woodward selling clothing at Trego's Menswear and Star Model. He earned "Top Salesman" awards from Chevrolet Motor Company for sales in the State of Oklahoma while working at Pierson's Chevrolet in Vici. He soon opened his first of many mobile home sales lots in Woodward and the rest is history. He sold mobile homes for close to 40 years. During those years he helped strengthen the Mobile Home Association of Oklahoma by serving as President several terms and traveling to Washington, D.C. to help draft national legislation to help create a better environment for the sale of affordable housing through mobile home sales.
Vernon had a green thumb. He had a knack for growing vegetables, flowers, and plants which he shared with many. We considered him our "Master Gardener." Vernon and Anita enjoyed traveling, embarking on many worldwide adventures and cruises with friends and family.
He was such an energetic and positive personality. He tried to retire many times but just couldn't manage to stay retired. In his final "retirement," he enjoyed working at the Woodward County Election Board and giving daily weather reports to the National Weather Center.
Vernon was a "trader" at heart. He loved to help people find what they were looking for. Some of his favorite avenues were the Penny News, Tradio, and chicken auctions.
He was a leader in his community and served in leadership and service organizations like the JayCee's, Vici Volunteer Fire Department, the Masons (over 60 years), and the Woodward Planning Committee.
Vernon was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Leedey and was an active member of various churches throughout his life, including serving as deacon and elder. He was a current member of the Vici Community Church when he passed away. His faith influenced how he dealt with people. He was known for helping others.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anita Lou Peck; sons, Jim (Lisa) and Steve Peck; grandchildren, Ashley (David Eggleston – fiancé) Nelson, Jenifer (Chance) Maxville, Allison (Chris) Watson, and James D. (JD) Peck; and great grandchildren, Hadley Nelson, Carlee and Ella Maxville, Crew and Dylan Watson. He is also survived by his uncle and aunt, Jim and Lynda Peck, who were not only family but close friends, his sister-in-law Ruby Peck, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Vernon will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community. We wish to thank his doctors, Traditions Hospice and other caregivers for the loving care he received.
