IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vivian Louise
Hanes
March 13, 1930 – May 31, 2024
Vivian Cunningham Whitehead Hanes was born on March 13, 1930, in Longdale, OK to Wilbur and Elsie Cunningham and went to be with the Lord on May 31, 2024, in Chickasha, OK at the age of 94.
Born during the depression and dust bowl era, she developed a strong work ethic working from an early age herding cattle, bringing in the milk cows, babysitting and packing peaches to later attending beauty school and opening a shop at age 16 in Camargo, OK.
Many life events showed her strength. On April 9, 1947, the night of the infamous Woodward tornado, Vivian eloped with Gerald Whitehead. She and Gerald lived in Camargo, OK then Perryton, TX for a short time and later moved to Goodwell, OK with their first child Russ and four more children followed--Connie, Darryl, Kerry and Lori. They followed their children's basketball playing all over the Panhandle. When Gerald was missing for two days in the 1957 blizzard, she held strong with four kids and 100 baby chicks in the house and a bird dog trapped under the house. She was suddenly widowed at age 38 when Gerald died of a massive heart attack leaving her with four children still at home whom she supported with her beauty shop that Gerald had built for her. She carried out their goal of having all five children graduate from college. She was a member of the Goodwell Church of Christ for 11 years and later the Keyes Church of Christ for 53 years. She married Huston Hanes in 1971 and they had 44 years together farming and later traveling. She worked as Keyes City Clerk and also at Marv and Dees Grocery. She was a member of the Hitch-n-Stitch Quilting Club.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Wayne and Troy, first husband Gerald Whitehead, second husband Huston Hanes, stepson Roben Hanes and grandson Kyle Whitehead.
She is survived by son Russell & wife Winnell, daughter Connie & husband Michael, son Darryl & wife Kelli, daughter Kerry & husband Danny and daughter Lori & husband Mitchell. Also surviving her are grandchildren Teri White, John Von Tungeln, Amy Gantt, Chelsea McCool, Brett Whitehead, Taylor Young, Laci Mullins, Mecah Winters, Ashlyn Williams, Ryan Rennels, Amber Wood, Mindi Robertson and Clayton Harriman. She is also survived by 25 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by three stepsons, Darus Hanes, Claud Hanes, and Lance Hanes and their families plus many nieces, nephews and friends.
Vivian was a wonderful mother and grandmother who was always there when anyone needed her. She especially loved God, family, friends, quilting, sewing, and baking bread. A friend to many, she was a cherished member of the community in both Goodwell and Keyes.
