Obituary

Wiley Dexter Britton was born to Edgar and Dora (Hester) Britton on June 29th, 1921 at Moorewood, OK. He left this life on August 2nd, 2012 in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 91.

Wiley was the sixth of nine children, all of whom grew up in the Depression Era. He attended Moorewood Public Schools through ninth grade, and then finished his education at Leedey Public Schools.

Wiley worked on the family farm until World War II. He was drafted into the United States Army on August 13th, 1942. After basic training at Camp Roberts, CA, he returned to Fort Sill, OK for officer's training. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He referred to himself as a "90-Day Wonder" when speaking of officer training. In 1945, the Army sent him to Okinawa. The war ended shortly before he arrived, but he stayed in Okinawa several months to decommission Army equipment and send it home. He was honorably discharged from the Army in April of 1945 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was proud of his service and looked back on it fondly. He continued to serve in the Reserves for several years, and he was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Wiley helped with the military funerals of local soldiers for many years.

After the war, he returned to Moorewood and to farming. He began developing a herd of registered Hereford cattle in addition to raising wheat and cotton. He and his brother Olen held many cattle auctions at Moorewood. Wiley continued in the Hereford business until retiring in 2000. Wiley enjoyed the Hereford business. He was a longtime member of the Oklahoma and American Cattleman's Association. He made many friends and loved to tell jokes. Wiley also enjoyed playing dominoes with his buddies in Hammon and Leedey.

On January 2nd, 1962, Wiley married Melba Louise Logue of Oklahoma City and formerly of Leedey. They had one daughter, Ona Lou, who brought them much joy. After both retired, they enjoyed going to local cattle auctions, drinking coffee, and spending time with family and friends. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year.

Melba passed from this life a few months after their anniversary. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Dora; three brothers, Glen, Olen, and Ezra; and three sisters, Ila Mae Harrell, Dorris Hogg, and Eloise West. He is survived by his daughter, Ona Lou Britton-Spears and her husband, Scott Spears; his sisters, Lois Steiger and Lamona McCallum, and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
