Arnett resident, William Merle Garner, passed from this life, at his home, on September 25, 2009. He was 77 years old at the time of his passing. William, son of Everett James and Anna Lois (Pfiefer) Garner, was born September 1, 1932 in Niangua, Missouri.
William's early years were spent growing up in Rocky, Oklahoma where he attended high school.
William enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1955. He attained the rank of C53 Cook First-class and also Machinists Mate 2. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean War Service Medal. He served aboard the U.S.S. Cassin Young, destroyer battleship No. DD-793.
On March 26, 1970 he was united in marriage to Janet Bussard. They were blessed with the birth of their only child, Greg. William worked in the construction business. His work took the family to Wichita, Kansas and Amarillo and Higgins, Texas before they settled in Arnett, Oklahoma.
William accepted Christ and was baptized at the young age of 10. While living in Higgins, he attended the Nazarene Church and after moving to Arnett began attending the First Baptist Church. He was a faithful and active member and always enjoyed playing Santa Claus at Christmas time for his church as well as others in the community.
William enjoyed spending his time away from work fishing and playing golf. He was a member of the Senior Citizens center in Arnett.
Family members preceding William in death are parents, Everett and Anna Garner; brothers, Melvin, Jim, and Robert Earl Garner; sister, Rethel Marie.
Survivors include son, Greg Garner of Arnett, OK; nephews, Mark Garner and Matt Garner both of Springfield, MO, Tony Garner of Clearwater, FL, Randy Garner of Wichita, KS, and Leslie Garner of Chihuahua, Mexico; nieces, Angela Garner of Kansas City, MO, Becky Garner of Ft Worth, TX, Rhonda Garner of Wichita, KS, Dora Bates and Laura Garner both of Amarillo, TX; former wife, Janet Garner; other family and a lifetime of friends.
